Instrument Library

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of instruments are available?

At this time the instruments available are: ukuleles, guitars (both full size and ¾ size), banjo ukuleles, and mandolins. Banjo, fiddle, and bass coming soon!

How much does it cost to participate?

It is free to participate in the Hayseeds Instrument Library. All you need is a library card. The Library front desk can help you get a card if you don’t already have one.

Who can participate?

Anyone with a library card from ages 6 to 99+ is welcome to participate in borrowing instruments, free music lessons, and jam sessions.

How long can I borrow an instrument for?

Instruments check out for 3 weeks, and can be renewed twice for 3 weeks each, as long as there are no holds waiting.

Can I reserve an instrument?

Yes! Instruments can be reserved through the Library catalog system, the same as books, DVDs, or other resources. To reserve online, go to the Library website www.westcusterlibrary.org, click on “Library Catalog” at the top right, and search for the instrument you want. Follow the prompts to place a hold. Or call the Library front desk at (719) 783-9138. The Library will notify you when the instrument is available to borrow.

Where do I pick up, check out, and return an instrument?

All instruments are picked up, checked out, and returned to West Custer County Library, 209 Main Street, Westcliffe. Instruments must be returned in person (they don’t fit in the book drop, anyway).

How should I store and handle the instrument I’ve borrowed?

Keep the instruments in a safe, climate-controlled location. Instruments should not be left in the weather, extreme hot or cold, or extremely humid or dry environments. When transporting your instrument, please keep it under climate control as much as possible, and do not leave instruments in vehicles for prolonged periods. Extreme temperature and humidity variations can affect not only the instrument’s health, but also your ability to effectively play the instrument. Ensure your hands are clean and dry before handling an instrument. Please remember the instruments are only packed in soft shell cases, so please HANDLE WITH CARE your instrument whether in its case or not. Borrowers responsible for severe damage to an instrument may be charged the instrument’s replacement cost.

Did I hear there were free music lessons as part of the Hayseeds Instrument Library?

You heard right! Musicians from the High Mountain Hay Fever Bluegrass Association are offering free music lessons for participants in the Hayseeds Instrument Library. Every instrument case has a card with details about how to get a music lesson.

Do I need to know how to read music or have any musical experience?

No. Beginners are welcome! No musical experience or reading skills needed to participate.

Will there be chances to make music together with other students, or perform?

Yes. There will be regular jam sessions to make music together, and there will be performance opportunities to show off your new skills. Ask your music teacher for details.

Who will help me tune my instrument?

Hayseeds Instrument Library teachers will help you with initial tuning and will teach you how to tune for yourself.

If I have my own instrument can I participate in the program?

Absolutely. Hayseeds Instrument Library teachers can provide more information.

Who is sponsoring this?

Hayseeds Instrument Library is sponsored by High Mountain Hay Fever Bluegrass Association and West Custer County Library.
