Jay Temple, consulting Geologist for the Colorado Geological Survey, will give a talk on Plate Tectonics.  The concept of plate tectonics was introduced in the early 1960’s as sea floor spreading. As technological advances allowed for the gathering of more data, it morphed into the continental drift. By the late 1960’s further geological investigations progressed into the theory of plate tectonics where the Earth’s crust is segmented into over a dozen independent “plates”.  The interactions of these plates along their boundaries helps geologists understand many of the Earth’s dynamic processes, including the origination of the Wet Mountain Valley and rise of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
